Chris's links
These are some links that I may have found interesting or useful at some
point. Standard disclaimers -- the presence of a link does not indicate
an endorsement, nor does absence of a link indicate a slight or a snub
-- more likely I simply haven't had occasion to add it. What is here owes
its presence to my having found something that interested
me.
Chris Knox
Gun Organizations
NRA.org National Rifle Association Home Page
NRA's Page -- Alerts, news releases, and general information.
Canada's National Firearms Association
Our friends north of the border are getting together and pushing
back on that country's draconian firearms restrictions.
Leroy Pyle's Paul Revere Network Page
Leroy was the San Jose cop who crossed swords with San Jose police
chief Joe McNamara over DeConcini's "assault weapon" ban back in the
late 80's. He went on to become one of the original electronic organizers
among the gun rights movement. Leroy was shoving data around FidoNet
before anyone ever heard of an internet.
Stereotype Busters
This category deserves a bit of explanation. The stereotypical gun
owner is a white male, over 40, with conservative viewpoints. Here are
some gun owners who don't quite fit that mold.
AWARE
Arming Women Against Rape and Endangerment is what it stands for.
One of the oldest groups that I know of among the women-oriented firearms
organizations, AWARE focuses on self defense and training. Political
action is secondary to their training mission.
Women Against Gun Control
Self defense is a women's political issue. WAGC's specialty is
political action.
Mothers Arms
Politicians going after the "Soccer Mom" vote need to meet these moms.
Pink Pistols
During a water cooler discussion about guns an openly homosexual
co-worker of mine was asked whether he held a CCW permit. "I'm a
faggot in Phoenix," he replied. "Do the math!" As with women, the self
defense angle gets very close to home for the homosexual community.
Geeks With Guns
Those hairy, T-shirt wearing, impatient guys with taped glasses who keep your
web site, network, database, mail server, and ISP running really need some good,
clean, noisy fun. They need the stress relief lest they become
the dreaded BOFH. Being
as how these guys are armed to the teeth, the lusers simply stay out of
their way. I'm a UNIX administrator in my day job and have found kindred
spirits.
Gun Media
Shotgun News
Everything you find in the pulp version of Shotguns News you
will see in the online version. It's more colorful online with a
straightforward index card format that makes for easy navigating.
And of course don't forget the
Neal Knox Report.
Government

Hot Legislation - This Week
Look here to see what's happening with headline legislation.
Library of Congress
Courts
LAWLinks
A page directed at lawyers, but useful for humans as well.
Provided by Lexis, the legal and journalism information provider.
Second Amendment Law Library
In-depth collection of scholarship on the Second Amendment. One of
the best sites around for term paper research or arguing the finer
points on a News group discussion.
SUPREME COURT DECISIONS
Cornell University Law School's collection of Supremes records.
United States Code
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The view of firearms as a social disease. Professor James Wright
(as in Wright-Rossi study) called the CDC's view a cost-benefit analysis that
looked only at the cost side.
Pro-Liberty Media and Think Tanks
Organizations listed here are dedicated to personal liberty in general
and gun rights in particular.
Libertarian Party
They've never been much of a political force, i.e. they haven't won
many elections. But the Libertarian Party is a party of principle. One
day that principle may be translated into political power.
Cato Institute
If the Libertarian Party ever becomes a serious contender, this
organization will be its brain.
Republican Liberty Caucus
The organized libertarian (lower-case "l") wing of the Republican party.
Reason Magazine
"Free Minds and Free Markets" One of America's most important
periodicals. It is to libertarianism what
The Nation is to American
socialism.
Jewish World Review
Here's some real diversity for you. To be a Jew and to espouse
political thought outside the Jewish mainstream as defined by
B'nai B'rith or
Simon Wiesenthal Center
is a
courageous act. Here's an ant-hill of Jewish thinking that challenges
the status quo on just about any topic you're interested in (and some
you may not be interested in but should investigate).
Independence Institute
David Kopel, widely-published attorney and Second Amendment scholar
serves as Research Director for this Denver organization.
Nonpartisan Political Sites
Tray.Com
Non-partisan window into the Federal
Elections Commission's unwieldy web site. Same information, better
organized. Sells ads. Occasionally slants by selective focus (once
drilled in on NRA contributions, nevermind all the free publicity from
the Media Establishment which amount to an in-kind contribution).
Antis
Violence Policy Center
Josh Sugarmann is the guy who first proposed exploiting the
confusion of the general public between semi-automatic and fully
automatic firearms. This site is his place. I was planning to put
this link up here anyway and got hurried along by a note directly from
Sugarmann. He was courteous enough to include a link back here. His
links page is the first I've seen with links to pro-firearms-choice
sites.
Handgun Control Memorial Dead Ends
Handgun Control Incorporated once had a cranny tucked away in a
corner of a pretentiously high-brow porn site (I am not joking) called
"Bianca's Smut Shack." I believe that the Bianca site is still around,
(I'm not going looking for it because...well, just because) but the HCI
site eventually went away. Maybe the folks at longtime HCI
supporter the United Methodist Church
took exception. In any case, the new and very flashy site that replaced
it has since bit the dust. Yields a "404 -- File Not Found."
Handgun Control Incorporated
Graphics-intensive with an imposing front page looking down the
business end of a pistol. Interesting bit under
Programs which
includes some surprisingly frank acknowledgements of HCI's alliance
with the showbiz kids in Hollywood. Also defunct.
The Return of Handgun
Control
The wacky folks over on Eye Street (right under the
United Methodist Church are back.
This page is much the same layout as the memorial dead-end above. See
Entertainment Resources
for the acknowledgement that
"entertainment can change attitudes" and a pointer to its Entertainment
Resources Department in Los Angeles. My wife thinks I'm paranoid. No,
dear, I just read.
Mother Jones Magazine
Mother Jones is truly an amazing publication. They brag about
how independent they are from the "corporate" magazines while hewing
puppy-like to the editorial line laid down by
The New York Times,
Time and
Readers Digest. I've
often thought it would be interesting to hear labor organizer Mary
Harris Jones' reaction to a bespectacled, college-educated
anarchist wannabe that suggested she hand her gun over to the nice
policeman.
The Pacific Center for Violence Prevention
Funding for this site provided by The California Wellness
Foundation. Extensive links page. Oddly absent are any dissenting
views.
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
The recently adopted resolution calling on members to "work toward
removing handguns and assault weapons from our homes and our communities"
Privacy
Gnu Privacy Guard
Gnu Public License replacement for the famed PGP (Pretty Good Privacy)
encryption tool.
Some Personal Pages
Jeff Chan's rkba.org -- Arms Rights and Liberty Information on the Internet
Useful and broad (albeit somewhat dated) archive of firearms and
rights-related information on the Net. Some of my favorites among
Jeff's stuff
Howard Fezell's Second Amendment Home Page
Attorney and former NRA Director Howard Fezell has an extensive set
of links and information on the Second Amendment. Lots of good
practical advice -- like how to read legal citations, plus links
to law review, sociological and other scholarly articles.
Viking Phoenix Web Page
An intriguing page. The anonymous (to me anyway) owner publishes an
occasional newsletter of things that make you go "hmmm." Eclectic set of
links to commentaries and writings including Sun Tzu's The Art of
War,
text of The Resister, an underground newsletter published by
Special Forces Underground, celebrity links, yakuza movie links (like I
said, eclectic) and anything else political. Hardline libertarian
(lowercase L) bent.
GunCite: Gun Control and Second
Amendment Issues
A fine digest of current gun rights information. Lots of good
general information for anyone who wants to learn more about the gun
rights debate.
Rich's Firearms Page
I limit the number of personal firearms page links
because of the overhead of keeping them up, however this one is
very slick and also has a passle of content-rich links. Links into the
Shooters' Web Ring an exceptionally rich link list.
Home Page of David T. Hardy
Well-known Second Amendment scholar. This page contains pointers to his
published works, mostly stashed in Jeff Chan's FTP site. I'd often heard Hardy's
ancestry questioned, particularly by the antis. This page should resolve any doubts.
Oleg Volk's RKBA Page
Beautiful photography combined with an in-your-face attitude
toward gun rights. Nearby pages include a
photo gallery and
Oleg's personal page. Interesting, varied,
often unusual subject matter. Like attending a good photography exhibition
at a bohemian gallery. Why, yes, I'd take another hit of espresso.
Strictly Commercial
Yankee Dog
Thoroughly reactionary catalog featuring books, knives, black powder
and stuff to stock your bunker.
Just For Fun
Boot Liquor Radio -- Dysfunctional Country
Classic country, Western Swing, cowpunk, drinkin' and fightin' songs --
whatever you call it, listen to this Internet radio station and confirm all
your liberal friends' stereotypes.
